I don’t normally blog about my family, but my husband and I just returned from a long weekend in Estes Park, Colorado and I had to share the photos of the gorgeous Aspen in Estes and Rocky Mountain National Park.  Estes is the place our family goes to every summer for a vacation filled with hiking and the complete peace that comes with being in such a gorgeous place.  Jerry and I have spent countless hours hiking on trails and off trails in breathtaking terrain and it is a very special place for us.   This post has lots of photos, but they are all so gorgeous that I had trouble narrowing them down.  I took them with a Nikon D7000 that I was trying out for the first time.  I like the camera, but still need to put it through a few more tests before I decide if I should keep it.  I bought it recently after taking my Pro camera to the pumpkin patch and after watching the farm dust envelop my camera, I thought, hmmm, I probably shouldn’t be lugging my expensive camera everywhere.

The first is a group of Aspen right off of Trail Ridge Road as you turn to head up to Bear Lake.

Don’t you  just want to head down this road?  It leads to the Fern Lake trailhead.

These are the ferns at Fern Lake!  LOVE it!

Look at the aspen sprinkled in the side of the mountain at Storm Pass.  I took this on the drive up to Bear Lake.  It was very overcast.

The view of Thatchtop on the way down from Bear Lake, Estes Park’s top tourist attraction.

On the way back from Bear Lake, the sun peeked through the clouds and we stopped at Storm Pass again because I knew I wanted this exact shot.  I love the star burst.

It doesn’t get much better than these next two shots.  I could see this as a framed poster!

I have been wanting to learn how to use my flash off my camera to creatively add lighting to photos, so we hiked up to Nymph Lake and I brought my flash along.  We met another couple from Arlington, Texas and shared our views on God and life as we hiked up the trail and they were kind enough to take this photo of us.  Paul held the flash off to the side and Julie took the photo.  I am so excited to have a photo of Jerry and me together!

I’m over the top with joy that we also got this shot at the overlook above Nymph Lake.  That’s Long’s Peak in the background.  It’s the tallest peak in Rocky Mountain National Park.  Jerry has hiked it a bajillion times, but I hiked it with him several years ago.  We started on the trailhead at 2:30 am and reached the summit at 7:30.  It was a special time for us.  The view from up there was unreal.  Sort of like being in an airplane.

Paul and Julie again did a phenomenal job as photography assistants.

The last day we were in the mountains, we were blessed with snow.  We headed out to take photos.  This is the same bank of trees off of Trail Ridge Road.

Gorgeous!

It’s Elk mating season in Estes Park, so no trip to Estes would be complete without a photo of the Elk.  My favorite Elk sighting was the one that slowly closed the street in front of us while we drove out of town on our last day!

Twin Sisters.

I love the blue skies in Colorado!

We drove back to Storm Pass to see how differently it looked with the snow.  That’s Hallet’s Peak in the background.

It’s just heavenly.

One of the advantages to being in college is that you have all of this time after the holidays before you need to go back to school.  My daughter Courtney, her boyfriend Trevor, my son Matt and I headed off to New York to visit my parents in early January and we were excited to get snow!  Courtney was dying to get some photos in the snow so we rushed outside for about 10 minutes.  Poor Trevor didn’t have boots, so he was wearing socks and an old fashioned pair of rubbers that my Dad used to wear.  I beet they were 30 years old.  Needless to say, not only were Trevor’s feet freezing, but we didn’t want them showing  up in the photos!  I love how happy and carefree they look!  This first one is my favorite!

I also love these in black and white.

and I love how you can just see how crazy they are about each other from these images.

This year, I chose to do these brand new die cut Christmas cards.  I love the shape.  I dragged my poor family out to Unity Village to take our family’s photos.  I’ll post more about that session later as it was a riot.

Here’s our card!   The front  …..

and the back …….

Besides going to DC, we visited my parents in upstate NY.  Mostly, we hung out with my parents and my brother Jamie’s family.  We played mini golf with my parents next door neighbors at a place called  Chucksters which boasts having the longest mini golf hole in the world.   The kids also bungeed jumped there and I took a photo of them with their Grandma at sunset.

We always go to Uno’s when we are in Vestal.  They have a gluten free menu so my son and I can eat without worry.    Here’s a shot of my sons with my Dad.

We went to Maryland and stayed with my wonderful, generous, fabulous sister Patti and her equally wonderful husband Jeff.  While there, we visited my brother Peter, and Patti and Jeff’s kids’ Jon and Kari.  Patti hosted a crab fest for us.  Wow, the crab were AMAZING!  So yummy.   We don’t get to Maryland often, and this was my first visit since Pat and Jeff lost their son Jason in a tragic car accident right before Thanksgiving in 2008.   Jason was a superb soccer player and one of those truly fun people that love life and never say anything bad about other people.  To say that he is missed by many is an understatement.

The morning we left, I took a quick shot of Kari.  Aren’t her eyes gorgeous?

We left Maryland and drove back to my parent’s in upstate NY.  We drove right past Gettysburg so we just had to stop (despite the kids’ loud groans).  Here’s the Gettsyburg battlefield looking in the direction that the Pickett came from when Lee had his troops charge through this open field. I can’t imagine the courage these men had.

Visit DC with your family.  Really, if you can find a way to go, you should.  It’s educational and fun and great for your kids to see our nation’s capital.

I haven’t really shared anything about my family on my blog, so I thought it was time.  In July, my husband, four kids and I conquered the sweltering heat in DC for  a two day visit.  The first day, we visited the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum and the Natural History Museum.  My three oldest – Courtney, Matt and Cooper – and I went to the Holocaust museum.  It was extraordinarily sobering.  I had been there once before and was excited for my kids to see the exhibit.  On the second day, we visited the monuments.  It was a marathon day and we were pooped.  If we did it over, I would have taken the trolley tour of the monuments instead of having my husband drive us and drop us off at each one.  He used to live in DC many years ago, so we was willing to forgo seeing the monuments again – with the exception of the Franklin Delano Roosevelt monument, which ended up being the favorite monument for Jerry and me.  Here are a few photos from some of the monuments.

Lincoln – with the Washington monument in the background ….

On the steps of the Jefferson Memorial.   Ideally, one does not cut off the feet of their children in a snapshot – especially if they are a portrait photographer!

This was at the FDR Memorial, a haven of peace and relaxation in busy DC.  It’s divided into outdoor rooms – one for each of his terms.  Go there.  You won’t regret it!

And finally, we went to the sunset parade at the 8th and I Marine Barracks.  This was my children’s unanimous vote for their favorite part of DC.  (And, if you have kids ranging from 7 – 21, nothing is ever unanimous!)   If you go to DC in the summer, get tickets to the 8th and I Marine Barracks sunset parade.  Their parades are amazing.  My husband was stationed there many years ago.  Get your reservations early as they run out of tickets in May.  Click here to see a YouTube Video of the parade.  Below is a photo I took of the silent drill team.  For those of you who are into photography, I took it laying on the ground at an ISO of 6400. It was the only way I could capture it since flashes were forbidden!

I love to shoot in the West Bottoms area!   Here are some images from last May.

We had lots of snow during the holidays and my daughter requested a session in the snow!  It was so cold that we could only stay outside for 10 minutes at a time.
