This wonderful family generously bid on a portrait package I donated to our kid’s elementary school’s charity fundraising auction.  Proceeds were used to buy new technology for our classrooms such as smartboards.  The auction was a smashing success and I was delighted to have the chance to meet and photograph this wonderful family.  The boys were fabulous … fun, energetic and full of personality yet perfectly behaved.   Mom delayed having the portraits taken until they could all be happy as they lost their cherished dog this year.  I’m glad she waited as the leaves were perfect for their session.  I especially loved how her teal dress stood out from the color of the leaves.   Mom did a great job choosing what to wear for their family portraits.   These were taken in Overland Park, Kansas with a Nikon D700 and 70-200mm lens.

This first image is going to be cropped as is and hung on their wall.  I love this crop.  It’ a fun and modern way to showcase your family portrait.

I was so glad that Mom and Dad chose a photo of the two of them.  How many couples never get their portrait taken and then regret it?

I love this shot of the boys fooling around.  These brothers are very close and you could really tell that during the session.

He is so handsome and favors Dad.

He  is also incredibly handsome and looks a lot more like his Mom.

I think they look so perfect sitting on the bridge on the walking trail near The Blue Valley Recreation complex.

This is one of my favorites from the session and I was delighted that they ordered it.  It’s too fun!  Thanks for a great photo session!

Meet the “D” Family.  We frolicked in the Fall leaves with the goal of getting a mixture of posed and more lifestyle shots.  The little guy was absolutely funny.  He wanted nothing to do with photos and had a blast dragging my prop chair all around.   We tried and tried to get him to sit still and look toward me, but he had other things on his mind.  He was so darn cute that you just had to laugh at him.   These are just a few of the adorable shots we got of this wonderful family.

I love how this captured his spirit.

I love how I caught him as he was dragging the chair.  I thought this just really captured his personality!

And I love his sweet grin!

His older sister patiently waited while we worked hard to get great shots of her little brother.

He just melts your heart.

The “T” Family travelled over 2 1/2 hours for a photo session for the second time in 4 weeks.  They are such troopers!  The first time was for their little girl’s newborn session, which we had in my home studio just a few weeks prior to this session.   See the session HERE. They have a dog they wanted in their family portraits so we had fun trying to get eye contact with both the dog and their baby girl!  I love this first shot of the dog watching over the baby.

Isn’t she adorable!

I love this one with the sun behind them.

This was the image they chose for the front of their holiday cards.

I was honored to take portraits of these siblings while the older daughter was home for the summer.  And what made it especially wonderful was that they wanted to take their portraits at their beautiful home.  I think family portraits taken at your home are so meaningful.  It often makes younger children much more comfortable to be in their home instead of at a park where they are easily distracted.  I loved that they wanted a photo with their dog, which was a real sweetie.

Isn’t she absolutely gorgeous?  And she’s beautiful on the inside also!

I love this family!  They were so adventurous to drive downtown to the West Bottoms for a family session.  You just can’t get portraits like this anywhere else.  I love the West Bottoms.  I love the texture of the bricks and old paint and rust and old buildings and I love the juxtaposition of  something beautiful (like my clients) against the grungy backgrounds.

Everyone that has portraits done int he West Bottoms wants some on these red steps.

I will cry the day these railroad ties are gone.

I love architecture and I’m absolutely crazy about this bridge.  I couldn’t decide if I liked it in color or black and white better.  What do you think?

Out of the blue, I received an inquiry from a Mom whose husband had just received military orders to head to Afghanistan.  He flew back to KC from Fort Bragg and had just a few days before he needed to head back to Bragg and ship out to Afghanistan.  They wanted to head to the West Bottoms for some unique family portraits and we did some posed shots and some casual, relaxed and natural portraits where the kids were just having fun blowing bubbles.  The three kids were so much fun and so cute and it was obvious how much their Mom and Dad adored them.

For those of us not in the military, it’s hard to imagine what it’s like for families to be separated for long periods of time, much less to have one of our loved ones head off to a war zone.  The parent that leaves has to focus on their mission and their job and it’s impossible to understand how much they miss their family unless you’ve walked in their shoes.  The parent that is left behind must run their family and put on a happy face for the kids so they don’t feel the stress or worry of the deployment.  That’s a tough job.  I can’t thank our servicemen and women and their families enough for the sacrifices they make so the rest of us can enjoy personal freedoms that are unknown in many parts of the world.

Thank you M. Family!  (and hug those darling kids for me please!)

This is my personal favorite from their session because I felt like it truly captured the kids personality.  We created a 3 image storyboard using this image and a series of shots similar to this one.

Everyone LOVES this red door!

Mom is an interior designer so she appreciated the juxtaposition of posing with this chair in front of a brick wall!

Don’t you just know they love each other?

There are days when I really, really love being a photographer.  And there are clients that make me really, really love being a photographer.  These were those kind of clients.  The grandparents, the Mom and Dad, the Aunt and Uncle and the children … they were the type of people that photographers dream about working with and the types of clients that light you up with joy when you run into them one day at the grocery store or at Target.  The day after the session, I found myself thinking about the sweet sensitivity of the oldest boy, the way something would light up the middle boy’s face with delight and the sweet, sweet face and perfectly shaped lips of their baby brother.

These boys were one of the most well behaved kids I have ever worked with and their parents were fabulous at parenting.  Plus, they were really neat people!

Thanks for such a wonderful session!

You all know that I LOVE the West Bottoms.  So, I was sooo happy this family decided to venture there with me early one morning for family photos.  I’ve never had a family session in the West Bottoms, so I was doubly excited.  And really, really nervous because I  know this family and I always get nervous when I photograph the people I know.  The Mom adores her girls and is just about the kindest and most humble person you would ever meet and the Dad is one of those Dads all girls want – super involved with their kids’ activities.  He coaches his daughter’s sports teams and makes the girls feel great.

It was chillier than we expected that day, so the girls would keep their fleeces on and then take them off for a series of photos.  We even had to warm up in the car near the end.  It was very windy, so it was extra difficult to keep everyone’s hair from blowing every where.  Here are a few of my favorites from the session.  Thanks for a great time!

And this last one is called the family head smoosh, so aptly named by my good friend and fellow photographer Lori.  Thanks for the idea Lori!

I had a fun time doing a mini session with this family at their house one afternoon.   We used a studio light for the shot on the white couch and then took some cute photos on this wonderful wooden bench in their family room using natural light streaming in through the back windows.  Everyone was very relaxed so it made for a fun time.

Kudo’s to this family for getting up very, very early on a Sunday morning and trekking out in the misty rain for their portraits.  We almost cancelled the location with the fall foliage at the last minute, but I’m sure glad we didn’t.  The colors of the leaves are magnificent!  I wish I had a photo in the leaves of my own family as the fall always seems to remind me of growing up in upstate New York.  Our Falls were glorious and filled with cider, candied apples and MacIntosh apples.  Yum!  Every September, my Mom picks MacIntosh apples at the orchard and ships me a box.  I am very greedy with my MacIntosh apples.  Ask my kids.  But, I’m digressing …

Look at the clothes on this family!  Wow!  They get an A+ in the “what to wear” department!

After we took these images, we headed to Unity Village, one of my new favorite places. I’d been using the wooden doors near the fountains for photos, but wanted to try out these neat columns.  I love this shot!

And finally, I love it when families look at one another and smile or laugh.  These images usually have so much personality.  I can’t decide if I like this better in color or black and white, so I’m posting both!
